This site is dedicated to the memory of Jean Weir Murphy and Hugh Murphy. Much loved and sadly missed. Together now, in our hearts.

Jean was born on 28th April 1939, to Jane and Donald Murray, the third of 6 siblings. She grew up in Girvan, where her dad was a deep sea fisherman.
She married Hugh on 8th September 1962 and they moved to Cumnock after their marriage. After their children Alison and Hugh were born they moved to Gorebridge in Midlothian in November 1967.

Jean loved being Hugh's wife and mum to Alison and Hugh as well as mum-in-law to Rona but best of all she loved being Erin's gran.

She sadly passed away on 24th August 2014.

This fund was set up in her memory because she had a soft spot for the RLNI. In 1965, sadly the Oban crew had to recover her father's body, but she and the family were grateful that they were able to do so. The family knew the perils and risks of working at sea and after this experience Jean was always appreciative of the work done by the RNLI.

She loved nice jewellery and had quite a collection, but on sorting through it all after her passing, the family found a little RNLI pin badge that she had kept, possibly after making a donation. Jean was never a sentimental person and definitely never a hoarder...she never held on to anything if it had outgrown its usefulness, so that wee pin badge was special to her. That's why part of the retiral collection after her funeral was donated to the RNLI and also why this fund was set up initially in her memory.

Sadly, Hugh was diagnosed with bowel cancer just 6 weeks after Jean's passing. He stoically endured ill health for a further two years until he passed away on 9th October 2016. He never lost his sharp wit and was popular with the carers and nurses looking after him. Our very own 'wild colonial boy '.  Born on 11th June 1935, Hugh grew up in Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire with his parents and sister, Violet.

He met Jean in the Bobby Jones Dance Hall in Ayr. A family man, he missed Jean very much and so it is fitting that we as a family want the tribute fund to be in memory of them both. They were married for almost 52 years. Together now in our hearts.

Eternal Father, Lord of hosts,
Watch o'er the men who guard our coasts.
Protect them from the raging seas
And give them light and life and peace.
Grant them from thy great throne above
The shield and shelter of thy love.
